Bienvenida, tortuga.
I didn't "get" it; I "bought" it. Because I was out walking—not the turtle, but me. Let me explain from the beginning, as this might be confusing. I walk a lot because covering long distances calms me down—10 km, 20 km, 30 km, or even 40 km during intense training. Walking at a steady pace leads to many discoveries. Last month, I spotted turtles twice. The first time was in a stream running through a residential area; a large turtle that seemed out of place there. Amidst a heavy downpour, the turtle was gazing up at the rainy sky. The second time was on the path to a quiet beach I often visit; a turtle there retracted its head, startled by my voice. I had always wanted a turtle to pair with the ceramic crane that had stood in solitary silence in my garden since my grandfather's time. Just then, a Shigaraki ceramic turtle arrived at the humble souvenir shop where I work part-time. I felt that encountering turtles twice in unexpected places was a sign that I should get this one. I walked 5 km carrying a backpack filled with 10 kg of white stones I’d bought at a hardware store. I realized that stones feel much heavier than a suitcase of the same weight. The crane and the turtle looked happy in that clean, bright space covered with white stones. Walking really is the best. Welcome, turtle.
